RESIDENTIAL SETTINGS

Sheena's Place

This is an emergency homeless shelter for women or women with children. Volunteers can work days, or evenings encouraging and motivating clients while they move along the challenging road to finding a stable place within the community.

Liz Carmichael House

The only women's focused residential methadone program in the Lower Mainland. Enthusiastic mature, compassionate women are needed to volunteer evenings within the residential program (crafts, games, discussions) as well as in the community (taking women out on local transit).

Pathways

Is an independent second stage housing program for women graduating from other community based programs. A woman can stay for up to 18 months while gaining life skills and enhancing her community stability. Volunteers needed as 1-1 mentors.

COMMUNITY SETTINGS

Maida Duncan Women's Family Resource and Drop-in Center

This program provides many barrier free services to women of the community. It provides a safe place for women to come in for refreshments or a meal (hot lunch every Thursday 11.30 - 1.00pm), a chat or assistance in finding a community resource, a free shower, a free book or just some lively conversation. It provides scheduled access to both free computer tutors to help develop computer literacy at the CAP sponsored computer lab, and Grade 12 or GED (Grade 12 equivalency) classes supported by the New Westminster Adult Education Program. The center is also a FREE clothing center for women and children's items, as well as household items and a list of free available furniture can be checked. The centers 40+ volunteers work together as a team to provide a caring, supportive environment for the many marginalized women of the community.

Office / Administration Work

Our main office in New Westminster occasionally needs office support (filling, copying, faxing). Good command of English and some office skills are required. Maximum 4 hours a month. Also web designers needed for webpage upgrades (can be done from home).

Crime and Consequences Seminar

This is a public educational seminar sponsored by the Society for adult and youth offenders and members of the general public who have a connection/interest to shoplifting behaviour.
Volunteers assist with room set-up, check-in, receipts for court/probation ordered clients once every 2 months.

CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS

Allouette Correctional Center for Women (ACCW) - TBA

This is the provincial correction center for women. Volunteers from the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows areas will be recruited in spring 2006 to deliver a social recreational program at the site.

Youth Detention Center

Burnaby Youth Custody Service (BYCS)
BYCS is located in Central Burnaby on a main bus route. Volunteers assit in providing educational, recreational and support programs at open and secured custody.

Nanaimo

Volunteers visit women held in city / RCMP cells to insure that thier immediate needs / issues are addressed. This group of volunteers is also advocating for a local facility to hold incarcerated women on the island rather than transporting them back & forth from the mainland.
This group of volunteers has successfully changed the local jail rules by bringing women guards in to work with the female population and this model will be advocated throughout the Province.

Fraser Valley Institution (FVI) - (ABBOTSFORD) FEDERAL PRISON FOR WOMEN

This is a federal correction center for women. Volunteers work as part of a team providing social/recreation programs to incarcerated women. Further training from CSC is available to provide off-site escorts if volunteers are interested.
Must complete enhanced federal corrections criminal record clearance and CSC training.

Columbia Place

This is the only women's parole house west of Ontario. Mature, enthusiastic female volunteers encourage, mentor and support women who are transitioning from prison back to the community, weekday evenings both in residence and in the community.

Surrey Pre-Trial Center - Women's Remand Center

This is regional remand center for men and women located in Surrey.

The Surrey Pre-trial center is a maximum security facility for men and women who are charged with offences but have yet to receive bail.

Volunteers work with women and attend the center 1 of 2 days per week providing crafts, community speakers, board and card games coffee, snacks and consversation.
