Testimonials
Our volunteers contribute their time and effort in many ways. Each one gains from their experience in their own way.
Erica - Weekend Volunteer Coordinator
I love volunteering at E.Fry as all the volunteers, the staff and the clients are amazing people. The center is so laid back and inviting and it feels very rewarding to be volunteering for the "Drop-in center" that provides so many resources most importantly a caring ear and a welcoming attitude.
Jasmine Chao - SFU graduate on Criminology
I have been a volunteer with "E-Fry Women's Drop-in Center" since October 2004. I just graduated from SFU 6 months ago and have a full-time job.
Although I am only able to devote 2 hours of service per week at the Drop-in center, it has been such a rewarding experience. Aside from general duties such as supervising women in the "Drop-in center" and providing computer assistance and support, my other duties include sorting out donations, dish washing and grocery shopping. Occasionally I assisted women in filling out goverment forms, application forms and other documents.
Helping others in need makes me feel content, I really enjoy my time here.
Gerard Legal - High-school teacher
"I contacted the Elizabeth Fry Society, an organization with a long experience in providing assistance to people who have been incarcerated. It probed to be a wise choice.
My first assignment was at Burnaby Youth Open Custody Center where I helped students with their studies and provided support in completing their work for a period of 6 months. It was a most rewarding experience, working with a team of dedicated teachers who must constantly adapt to an ever-changing student population while maintaining each youth, focused on his or her individual goal, whatever the level he or she may be trying to attain.
I then switched to the Youth Closed Custody Center, where the average stay of the students is much longer, thus allowing each to benefit from a more sustained support is specific areas of their studies. I have been able to provide a small number of youth with tutoring in Social Studies and Languages in particular, in close collaboration with the staff of the school.
I cannot say enough how enriching this activity has been for me. I hope I can continue for many years to come and I am thankful to the Elizabeth Fry Society for having given me the opportunity to bring such support to youth in need."
Sean Corney - Criminology student
"I am a 24 year old Criminology student. When I am done my schooling I plan on becoming a Youth Probation Officer.
I volunteer every Wednesday in the cooking program. The kids/offenders are taught about nutrition, respect and working with others. Often the food that is prepared is made to serve to others, thus making the presentation important. Having a volunteer help out is beneficial to the kids' self-esteem and integrity.
Programs for offenders in custody have proven to be effective in reducing recidivism rates. I have volunteered at Burnaby Youth Secure Custody Center since April 2000 and I have found it to be a very rewarding experience."
